Lani - my passion
Cooking for me has always been about family.
Growing up it seemed like life revolved around meal times, we would play with the neighbours until dinner time, but after that it was time to be inside with the family and any visitors who were always welcome for a meal.
Adventures meant food
My parents loved adventures and learning about new places, the people, the geography and of course the food.
We travelled extensively around the country, my sister and I always keeping our eyes pinned to the window, trying to be the first to spot some bush tucker. At nights under the stars we often cooked over the open fire, enjoying the unique taste that comes with flames and smoke.
A farm in town!
As kids, settling back into town life was exciting, Mum and Dad set up our town block full of fruit trees, a few chickens, and huge garden beds overflowing with lush plants ready to be harvested.
We regularly had WOOFers stay sharing their culture and cuisine with us, so we were introduced to a wide variety of different flavours and techniques of cooking. It was exciting learning about all the different uses for ingredients, how one the one hand pumpkin is savoury, but then add a few other ingredients and it’s the most delicious desert I have tasted.
Food provence is everything to me
Knowing where our food is coming from is important to me. I love watching our plants grow and wandering around, picking what’s in season, and cooking with seasonal produce. It is also great to be able to harvest an abundance of produce then to preserve it. Instead of handing our baby daughter a plastic teething ring on my walks around the farm, I get great joy out of handing her a Kiwi Fruit or a Lemon to slobber over.
Greatest pleasure is sharing
I still love being in the kitchen and get real pleasure from having others enjoy and share my latest creations. At the table we still crowd around excited to share and try all that’s been created.
My childhood greatly influenced my love of food and family and I hope to pass this onto our children.
